PMDD — When Your Hormones Turn into a Villain Once a Month

Why we need to talk about this:

Even if you’re not a person who menstruates, we all know and want to help at least one person who does! If you or a loved one have ever felt like turning into a rage storm cloud two weeks before your period, only to wake up wondering if you dreamt the entire breakdown—welcome to the PMDD club. Population: too many people don’t even know it’s real.

PMDD isn’t just “PMS but make it drama.” It’s a severe mood disorder, and it’s been ignored for way too long because hormones are still considered “unserious” in the world of medicine. Rude.

So, what is PMDD exactly?

It’s like your brain and your hormones go on a toxic vacation together and leave you with:

  • Intense irritability or rage
  • Anxiety or depression (yes, the real kind)
  • Extreme fatigue or brain fog
  • The urge to quit your job, break up with everyone, and move to a cave (temporarily)

And then, like clockwork, you feel better, which is confusing.

How do we deal with it?

  • Track the cycle
  • Talk to a doctor who doesn’t say, “Have you tried yoga?” as a cure-all, since there are plenty of ways to treat it
  • Explore meds, diet shifts, and holistic supports like CBT or light therapy
  • Join PMDD support groups because the community helps, and it’s nice to hear “same, girl” from someone who gets it

The takeaway?

You’re not crazy. You’re chemically ambushed every month. Raising awareness means more people get diagnosed, feel validated, and start healing. Also, can we normalize having “cycle-friendly sick days” already?
